Interview with Photographer: Ashley LebedevAshley’s work is absolutely beautiful!  Her photographs tell a million stories.  Each have a sort of fairytale like quality with delicate details and pure colours.  Some look like stills from a vintage old film.  Take a look at her gorgeous gallery here.1. What is your name?Ashley Lebedev2. What age are you?26 years young.3. Where are you from?Twin Cities, Minnesota ( Minneapolis/St. Paul & Surroundings…)4. When did you realize your love for photography? In 2007 I took a much needed (several month) break from running a non-profit organization, and headed back out to my childhood home. I found an old camera there, and became inspired by the beautiful season I found myself inside of. One thing led to another, as I detoxed from overstress from the non-profit job, and I found myself taking long walks outside (grabbing the camera as I went). As the shutter snapped, each time I wandered, and with each upload to my computer upon returning to the house, I realized I was absolutely passionate about Photography. The rest is history. I nurtured the desire, and am now a Full time artist just a few years later. I had to get really lost to find my calling, I guess. :-)5. What is your proudest piece of work you’ve ever done? That is so tough, because I shoot everything from portraiture to landscapes, but if pressed must say, it would probably be a recent piece entitled: “Lily, In Her Youth…” which is actually part of an ongoing series I’m working on that was inspired by a poem I wrote earlier this year. The poem is a 48 line story illustrating a woman’s life that began in abundance and slowly (as she ages) becomes a sad story of loss and illness and squandered dreams. This piece is meant to be the first piece, illustrating her in her youngest days of youth and innocence, before any hardship fell upon her.6. What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now?I would like to be an established Conceptual Photographer & Writer/Poet. My dream is to show my photography privately in galleries worldwide, as well as publish works of not only photography, but also of fiction, and poetry. I am an avid writer, and love both photography and writing equally. 7. Who is your favourite photographer? This is such a difficult question, and it changes very often. Perhaps, instead, I can say my favorite artist (which never changes) and that I draw constant inspiration from: The famous Pre-Raphaelite Painter, John William Waterhouse. His works capture the innocence, and human condition, while maintaining the evocative quality and dreaminess that has inspired my work, continually. I am also in awe of Maxfield Parrish. He floors and humbles me.8. Who and what is your inspiration?I have so many. I can say I draw inspiration (on a personal and professional level) from the Earth quite a bit of the time. I find myself most inspired and ready to create after a nice long hike or camping trip. Getting back to my roots and to nature has always been paramount in my ability to create. I also find GREAT inspiration from poets like Pablo Neruda, and Patrick kavanaugh. I have endless books of their work.9. What are your favourite things to do?Aside from photography, I love writing, sketching & singing quite a bit. I have 2 big dogs (both lab mixes) that I spend a great deal of time playing outside with. I’m also a huge fan of meditation, and hiking, camping, travel, and things of that nature. :-)10. And finally, do you have a favourite saying or quote?Yes, definitely: “No tears in the writer. No tears in the reader” -Robert Frost.I feel that quote pretty much explains every facet of my work, and carries with it the meaning I try to relay within each of my pieces.

Yellow Brick Road

This was part of a fantasy shoot I planned in Wales. The creative team are part of a team I often work together with and the shoots always work because we are all thinking on the same wavelength. I have always loved fantasy theme and grew up watching and listening to tales and stories, dreamworlds and things you take with you onto adulthood. This was based on The Wizard of Oz, one of my favourite stories as a child.

Cerise

Another fantasy inspired image taken on the same day as the above. I wanted to try and capture this as though one was looking through the trees and just found this girl staring at the water. Again inspired by childhood fantasies and films I watched - especially the Disney movies.

Bernadette

This was a test shoot for my fashion portfolio, I wanted to show her culture in this particluar shot. The wind blew up just as I captured it, and framed her face beautifully. It recently won the AOP Open Awards 2009 as ‘Public Choice’.

6. What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now?
To be an established fashion photographer. At least I hope so, all this work wasn’t for nothing you know!

7. Who is your favourite photographer?
I have many favourites, here’s a few I have found to be inspiring over the past few months - Steven Klein, Solve Sundsbo, Poalo Roverse, Miles Aldridge, Sally Mann, Izima Kaoru. I am constantly in search of new and interesting photographers and I’m a fan of collecting photography books.

8. Who and what is your inspiration?
People, fashion, beauty, anything old and vintage, abandoned places, unique faces..

9. What is your favourite things to do?
As well as photography, I enjoy the cinema, drawing my ideas for photoshoots, fashion and I’m a bit of a shopaholic - I love collecting clothes (vintage & new).

10. And finally, do you have a favourite saying or quote?
“The best photographers are those that strive to do better each time.”

Interview with Photographer: Matt Caplin
We were very excited when Matt Caplin agreed to do an interview with us!  He is young and talented and his work speaks for itself.  He produces works which are inspiring, interesting and each with an amazing feel to each one.  You could sit and look through his gallery of works for ages.  You gain an insight into what he sees in the world and how he protrays his feelings in every photograph.  You can find his works at his website or his flickr.

Also when I realise photoshop isn’t a necessary force in digital photography - it’s all just light and love.
5. What is your proudest piece of work you’ve ever done?Quite possibly this photograph - it was the first photography tha tmade me think, ‘Hey, maybe I could do this fashion thing after all’. But funnily enough, I don’t actually the photo very much. Even though fashion photography can be expressed intimately, it will never be as personal as a portrait of somebody I love.

10. And finally, do you have a favourite saying or quote?‘Everything is an experience, whether it’s good or bad. Experiences build character.’

Interview with Photographer: Kalea Molloy

Oh La Lavely’s first ever interview is with Kalea Molloy, a very talented photographer. Her photos are so very Oh La Lavely, and after viewing her gallery, I’m sure you’ll agree. We just had to get an interview with her. She has an amazing diverse gallery and all her works are so meaningful and heartfelt. We can see she is going to have a great future in photography, make up and hair. She is a true multi-talented inspirational artist.

What is your name?
Kalea Molloy

What age are you?
18

Where are you from?
Nebraska

When did you realise your love for photography?
When I was 15, but I took a break from it until I was 17 and then started right back up again!

What is your proudest piece of work you’ve ever done?
“I Will Possess Your Heart”. This really got captured exactly the way I wanted it to.

What do you see yourself doing 10 years from now?
10 years from now I see myself being a happy make up & hair artist and of course always, always, always, doing and creating photography.

Who is your favourite photographer?
Well, usually I’ve always had too many to pick from, but I’ve got to say that Rockie Nolan has just totally impressed me, everything she does is solid gold, and you have to love her crazy style, the girl has a 300 dollar closet, but it’s cuter than anything else I’ve ever seen!

Who and what is your inspiration?
People’s faces really inspire me, I always see people walking and I’m constantly thinking about how I can capture them, or what angle they’d look best at, also music, and things I see in movies.

What are your favourite things to do?
Photography (obviously:P), hair & make up, I really enjoy collecting old cameras, spending time with loved ones, and my guilty pleasure: baking.

And finally, do you have a favourite saying or quote?
“Sometimes, there just aren’t enough rocks.” - Forest Gump
